Postal worker jailed for sick leave scam

A postal worker has been jailed 26 months for using phoney documents he bought from popular online shopping site Taobao to bilk his employer of 635 rest days over four years.

Tang Lai-kit, 40, also took HK$217,381 in sick leave pay, a court heard yesterday.

District Court Judge Frankie Yiu Fun-che said Tang's crimes were serious given the long span of time over which they were committed.

Tang used the documents from Taobao to make phoney doctor approvals for sick leave, which he then handed in to Hongkong Post.

When management grew suspicious and contacted the Medical Council for assistance, the council asked Tang to attend an interview, which he skipped. He submitted two fake medical reports instead.

The council then alerted the Independent Commission Against Corruption, which launched an investigation leading to Tang's arrest on January 10.
