Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said on Monday he would launch a new council to develop Hong Kong’s financial services industry on Thursday – one day after he delivers his maiden policy address.

“In three days’ time, the day after my annual government policy address, I shall launch the Financial Services Development Council,” he said at the Asian Financial Forum held at the Convention and Exhibition Centre on Monday.

The purpose of the council would be to promote the development of Hong Kong’s financial services industry and strengthen the city’s competitiveness as an international financial centre, Leung said.

He highlighted that the council would “make the best use of the many opportunities provided by the mainland”.

These could include pledges made by the central government to support Hong Kong’s development as an offshore yuan centre and an international asset management centre, Leung said.
