A transport worker was convicted yesterday of raping a woman who was lying semi-conscious in Aberdeen in June after popping more than 100 pills in a suicide attempt. Based on a jury verdict of 6 to 1, Chan Wai-tung, 28, was found guilty of raping the 38-year-old mother of one. He faces a possible life sentence. The Court of First Instance heard earlier that Chan found the unresponsive victim, identified only as "Z", in a park near Wah Kwai Estate at about 8pm on June 14. He put her on a trolley and wheeled her to a quiet place nearby, where he raped her. Chan was naked when he was stopped by two security guards, who called the police. The court heard that the defendant had 14 criminal records including theft, possession of and trafficking in dangerous drugs, criminal damage and assault occasioning bodily harm. He had been sent multiple times to drug addiction treatment centres, prosecutors said. Madam Justice Clare-Marie Beeson adjourned sentencing to March 26, pending a psychological report on the victim. The court had heard that before the rape, the victim, who was depressed over her divorce, had taken six kinds of psychiatric drugs, totalling more than 100 pills, together with a can of beer in an attempt to kill herself. The mother of a 15-year-old son, she later calmed down and gave up the suicidal plan, realising that she did not want to burden her family. She then walked towards a basketball court near the housing estate. By the time Chan and another woman found her, she had fallen asleep. Z recalled that, in a half-awake state, she heard the woman ask whether they should call the police, but the man replied that he would move the victim by trolley to a place where she could rest. The victim recalled a man tried to remove her shirt and she resisted by kicking him, but the cocktail of drugs she had taken rendered her powerless. It was security guard Zhou Xiujie who noticed Chan carting the victim on the trolley and grew suspicious. Zhou reported it to his senior and the two went to look for Chan and the victim. When they found Chan, he was naked, thrusting his hips, the court heard. They stopped him, and Chan claimed that he was having sex with his girlfriend who was drunk. He put on his clothes and left, and the guards called police. When arrested, Chan said: "I merely put her on the trolley out of a kind heart. She said she was hot. She removed her clothes. I didn't touch her." Prosecutors earlier said Chan's DNA was not present in the victim's body. Seeking clemency yesterday, defence lawyers said he used a condom and did not use violence on the victim.
