The family of a 23-year-old Hong Kong man who drowned off a beach in Taiwan asked the government for help yesterday.
The holidaymaker, Leung Yik-muk, was swept away by a large wave at a popular beach in Kenting National Park, south Taiwan, on Saturday evening, said coast guards in charge of the rescue.
The two-metre-high wave was brought on by Severe Tropical Storm Jebi, they said.
Firefighters carried Leung ashore and rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was later declared dead.
The coast guards said they informed Leung's parents about the accident, and would ask his friends who were with him to give their accounts to the police.
Yesterday, Leung's parents sought help from the Immigration Department. The department spokesman said it would follow the case through Hong Kong's economic, trade and cultural office in Taiwan and would provide the family with as much help as possible.
