Spanish wine merchants are showcasing their country’s cellar at a global wine event in Hong Kong after a bumper first half of the year on the mainland.

Spain, the world’s third largest wine producer, is the partner country in the city’s International Wine and Spirits Fair, which will see more than 1,000 exhibitors from 40 countries and regions take part, including first-timers Jordan, Lithuania, Montenegro and Morocco.

The Spanish pavilion features 91 exhibitors, up from 72 last year.

In the first half of the year, the country’s wine exports to China surged 40 per cent in volume to 1.6 million litres, and some 44 per cent in value to US$48.7 million (HK$377.5 million).

Leading wine merchant Alun Griffiths recently said Spain’s soft, warm reds were most suited to the Chinese palate.

Benjamin Chau Kai-Leung, deputy executive director of organiser Trade Development Council, said the fair had become one of the industry’s most important events. Last year’s event drew 20,000 buyers.
