Furniture trader held over HK1.4 million in unfilled orders

Some 200 people say they fell victim to J.M. Soft chain store, which closed down in September.

The director of furniture chain store J.M. Soft has been arrested on suspicion of accepting a total of HK$1.4 million for orders that went undelivered.

The Customs and Excise Department said yesterday it had arrested the 36-year-old man on suspicion of wrongly accepting payment under the recently amended Trade Descriptions Ordinance.

He has been released on bail and the investigation is ongoing.

Chik Shun-kwan, deputy head of the department's Consumer Protection Bureau, said there were about 200 alleged victims and the department had received 30 complaints. Another 64 referrals came from the Consumer Council and 170 from the police.

Customers complained that furniture had not been delivered.

The department said its investigation had found that J.M. Soft continued accepting orders and payment from customers while using various pretexts to delay delivery.

Chik said the total amount paid for undelivered goods was HK$1.4 million. The biggest single order was HK$29,000.
