Acclaimed historian, teacher and scriptwriter Ng Chun-bong - the first to study the history of Hong Kong television - died early yesterday morning, aged 66.
A prolific author, Ng - better known by his pen name Ng Ho - wrote extensively on Hong Kong history and popular culture, ranging from film to fashion.
His 2003 book, The History of Hong Kong Television Volume One, was considered the first comprehensive study of the history of Hong Kong television.
Baptist University's Academy of Film head Cheuk Pak-tong praised Ng for his vast contribution to the study of Hong Kong television and film criticism, and for his dedication to the grooming of young talent.
"He was the first to put Hong Kong television into historical context," Cheuk said. "He was also the best teacher in scriptwriting. It's a great loss."
In 1975, Ng joined TVB, contributing scripts for a number of drama classics that are considered to have set the standard for the city's television industry. These included A House Is Not A Home (1977) and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (1979).
He left TVB in 1989 to embark on a teaching career, becoming a lecturer and associate professor at the then Baptist College's Department of Communication.
In 1995, he became the head and associate professor of the Department of Cinema and Television at the school, which was renamed Baptist University. He remained head until 2001 and retired from the position of professor in 2009. Ng was diagnosed with cancer in 2000 and recovered after treatment, Cheuk said. But the illness appeared to have returned over the summer.
The academy will host a memorial service, and further details will be announced, Cheuk said.
