A drug suspect jumped bail set at HK$500 after a High Court judge last week overrode a magistrate's decision to keep him in detention and released him pending trial, a court has heard.
The suspect, Leung Ka-kit, 34, failed to appear in Eastern Court yesterday to answer two charges related to the drug Ice.
The court waited almost two hours but received no news from Leung. Magistrate David Chum Yau-fong then issued an arrest warrant and confiscated his HK$500 bail money.
Chum also requested that police take Leung to court immediately upon re-arresting him.
In his first appearance in Eastern Court on June 10, Leung denied charges that he had possessed the drug and a device with which to smoke it.
His case was adjourned to July 14 and he was released on bail.
But on the day of the trial, Leung said he needed time to look for a lawyer and asked for an adjournment.
Magistrate Symon Wong Yu-wing set a new trial date for yesterday but revoked Leung's bail without giving any reason.
Leung was kept in detention for four days last week until he re-applied for bail, this time at the High Court.
Court of First Instance deputy judge Mr Justice Michael Stuart-Moore found Wong was wrong to have remanded Leung in custody without a proper reason and called for an urgent hearing to process Leung's bail application.
Stuart-Moore also rapped the magistrate for "bringing disgrace" to the judiciary and apologised to Leung on behalf of the bench for wrongly denying him his liberty. The judge then released Leung on HK$500 bail.
Earlier, the court heard that police had stopped Leung outside the Central piers on April 30 and arrested him on drug-related offences. He was released on police bail and formally charged in June for allegedly possessing 0.55 grams of Ice, one glass container with a plastic cap and one plastic tube fit for the inhalation of Ice.
