The head of the Law Society and a professional coalition have rejected a newspaper's allegations that they rigged a non-profit scheme to gain benefits.

Society president Ambrose Lam San-keung said in a statement that the report by Apple Daily was "a relentless attack" on him, his wife and family.

He said the report was "untruthful" and had "brought a lot of pressure upon all the parties involved". The Hong Kong Coalition of Professional Services also contested the report, but neither it nor Lam specified what the inaccuracies were.

The two statements were made after Apple published a front-page story alleging Lam was involved in a company that was making "tens of millions of dollars" after securing a management deal with the coalition to run a conference centre.

The report comes at a time when Lam is under fire within the Law Society for backing Beijing's contentious white paper asserting its authority over Hong Kong.

The Joint Professional Centre, located at The Center in Central, was leased by the Urban Renewal Authority to the coalition at a nominal fee of HK$1, as a non-profit establishment.
