Hundreds of solicitors are expected to turn up at a special meeting tonight to cast their vote on a motion of no confidence in Law Society president Ambrose Lam San-keung.

It will be the first time the 7,400-strong society has met to debate such a resolution against a president.

"We hope more members can come and cast a vote, especially those who have signed a proxy vote form against the no-confidence motion under pressure," said Kevin Yam, one of the three-member group that initiated the anti-Lam campaign.

Lam has been under fire since June, when he expressed support for Beijing's controversial white paper on Hong Kong affairs, while 1,800 barristers and solicitors marched in protest against the document. His comment that "the Community Party is great" fuelled the flames.

Lam could not be reached for comment yesterday. A public relations officer at the society told the media there was no need to turn up as the meeting would happen behind closed doors.

The meeting starts at 6.15pm at Southorn Stadium, Wan Chai.
