Art sale kick-starts four new schemes to help Hong Kong's needy

An auction of donated works of art that included pieces by Hongkonger Wilson Shieh and mainland painter Zeng Fanzhi raised nearly HK$3 million last night for programmes to help children and elderly in need.

An auction of donated works of art that included pieces by Hongkonger Wilson Shieh and mainland painter Zeng Fanzhi raised nearly HK$3 million last night for programmes to help children and elderly in need.

Sixteen pieces were auctioned by Sotheby's at a charity dinner organised by the SCMP Group at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Wan Chai, with the money going to three non-profit organisations.

"The funds we raised today will go the distance towards helping both children and the elderly that need your help," said SCMP Group chairman Dr David Pang Ding-jung.

An oil painting on a round canvas by Zeng, titled , went for HK$1.5 million. Sotheby's sold another of Zeng's paintings, , for US$23.3 million last year.

Also auctioned was a Chinese ink and gouache on silk painting titled by Shieh.

There were also works by Indian painter Sohan Qadri and the British-born Hong Kong painter and installationist Simon Birch.
