A senior education official who lives next door to Chief Secretary Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor on The Peak is the latest victim in a string of break-ins in the exclusive neighbourhood.
The neighbour, Cecilia Law Lai-kwan, returned to her ground-floor flat on Barker Road, next door to the chief secretary's official residence Victoria House, at 11.30pm on Wednesday to find it broken into.
Police said an initial investigation showed jade ornaments worth more than HK$20,000 had been stolen.
"A living room window was removed from its fixture and there was [evidence] of ransacking inside one of the bedrooms," a police officer said.
Police combed the area but no one was arrested.
Law, 53, the Education Bureau's deputy project director, lives in a three-storey block of government quarters in the converted maternity block of Old Victoria Hospital at 17 Barker Road. Victoria House is at No 15.
Asked to comment, Law said: "As it is in the able hands of the police of Hong Kong for their investigation, I would be obliged if I could be excused from providing further information related thereto." Law's domestic helper was reportedly in the flat but was undisturbed.
The officer said it was the first burglary reported on The Peak since a series of breaks-ins in July. "We will step up patrols and mount special operations in the area," he said.
On July 29, an antique vase, US$300 and HK$500 in cash were stolen from the home of shipping magnate Antony Marden in Middle Gap Road. That came after police arrested two mainland visitors on July 17 as the pair attempted to escape on a double-decker bus after a bungled raid on a four-storey house on Mount Kellett Road.
Between July 13 and 17, burglars struck at least six luxury houses on the Peak.
There have been a number of raids on luxury homes this year. This year's biggest raid was in February, when five-carat diamond earrings worth HK$7 million and HK$1.7 million in cash and valuables were stolen from the Sai Kung home of a Taiwanese businesswoman.
There were 29 burglaries with property worth HK$500,000 or more stolen in the first six months of this year - compared with 21 cases a year ago.
