A domestic helper was arrested after a toddler in her care plunged to her death from a fifth-floor flat in Yau Ma Tei while her parents were out yesterday afternoon.

It is the second accident in two weeks in which children had been left unsupervised.

The 21/2-year-old girl had been left unattended when she fell from the window of the family's flat on Canton Road, police said.

The domestic helper reportedly told police she had been in the bathroom while the toddler was sleeping. She was arrested for child neglect and held for questioning.

A week ago, three children were injured when they caused a gas explosion after they had been left home alone.

Five passers-by were also hurt in the incident.

The two brothers and their friend, aged from 11 to 15, were believed to have been trying to cook using a gas lighter over an LPG cylinder.

The ensuing blast blew out the windows and air conditioner from the third-floor flat in Yuen Long.

The cylinder had apparently run out of gas, and when the 15-year-old boy went to get a new one, the two younger children started playing with the equipment and caused the explosion.

The children sustained facial injuries and five people on the street were also injured.

The mother of the two brothers, who was out at the time, was arrested on suspicion of child neglect.

Yesterday, police received a call at 1.35pm after the little girl was heard falling to the ground. She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a semi-conscious state but was declared dead at around 6pm.

There were no safety railings on the windows of the flat, the girl's father said.

He was at work at the time of the accident and his wife was also out, with the child in the care of the domestic helper.

The Yau Tsim Mong District crime unit is investigating.
