Update | Watch: Burst water pipe creates urban geyser at busy Causeway Bay junction

A water pipe at the junction of Canal Road West and Leighton Road burst this morning, creating a large and powerful jet of water which crashed against the flyover above.

Water Supplies Department staff battle to stem a burst pipe that created a spectacular "urban geyser" in busy Causeway Bay yesterday, limiting or cutting off tap water in nearby buildings for hours. A water pipe at the junction of Canal Road West and Leighton Road burst this morning, creating a large and powerful jet of water which crashed against the flyover above.

The pipe burst at about 10.30am and the ensuing urban geyser continued for more than two hours before the Water Supplies Department brought the flow of water under control.

The dramatic scene attracted a crowd of passers-by filming videos and taking photographs with their smartphones.

Traffic was briefly limited to one lane for a short stretch of Leighton Road before resuming to normal. 

Tap water supply to some buildings in Wan Chai has been suspended or limited as a result of the burst pipe, which the department preliminarily put down to damage caused by "drainage works".
