Another day of traffic congestion as road closures remain, kindergartens reopen

Families taking their young children to kindergarten on Hong Kong Island are expected to further burden public transport services hamstrung by pro-democracy demonstrations.

Families taking their young children returning to kindergartens on Hong Kong Island are expected to further burden public transport services there, which have been hamstrung by ongoing pro-democracy demonstrations.

Classes at all kindergartens in Wan Chai, Central and Western districts resume on Thursday, two days after primary schools were reopened there.

Lessons at secondary schools in both districts had already started again on Monday.

The Transport Department advised schools and parents to discuss routes and time for picking up students with their contracted bus operators.

Drivers should avoid districts and school areas affected by protests, it said. Commuters should continue to start their journey earlier and allow more time for travelling, it reiterated.

Meanwhile, on Hong Kong Island, 25 routes of New World First Bus and Citybus remain suspended while 140 routes continue to be diverted.

Bus operators said routes passing through Central, Admiralty and Wan Chai would be delayed, as some roads in Admiralty have been closed to traffic.

The Kowloon Motor Bus said 70 bus routes in Kowloon and the New Territories remained temporarily diverted. Another 74 cross-harbour routes to Hong Kong Island have been diverted.

Four cross-harbour routes remain suspended on Thursday.

The MTR also said passengers should spare more time for their journeys as "the network is busier than normal,” the subway operator said in a statement.

Trains will run more frequently after 7.15am, MTR said. The corporation said train services would be enhanced throughout the day if necessary.
