The former deputy manager of Happy Valley soccer club was yesterday fined HK$4,000 after admitting he bet illegally on a game his team played in January - and lost HK$43,000.

Hinson Leung, 26, changed his plea to guilty shortly after his trial started in Eastern Court.

Magistrate Li Kwok-wai told Leung he should have been aware of the conflict of interest. "You are in a special position," he told Leung.

The magistrate said although there was no evidence to show that Leung had engaged in match-fixing, the fact that he bet on his own team could still have resulted in gains for Leung.

"It is hard not to question, when managing the team, whether it would affect you in any decision-making in relation to the tactics used," Li said.

The court yesterday heard that Leung placed a bet with illicit bookmaking website hg0088.com before his team took on Sun Hei on January 5.
