The probe follows complaints by a parents' group, which was not identified.

But the Council on Professional Conduct in Education, which advises the government on measures to promote professional conduct in education, has previously urged the bureau to release the list.

James Hon Lin-shan, former chairman of the council, said it was important for the bureau to release the list as parents should know if teachers had committed any offences.

The council found that 60 to 70 teachers had been found guilty of various degrees of sexual offences from 2006 to 2012, Hon said. "The bureau has the responsibility to release the list in order to protect the students," he said yesterday.

The bureau has told the council that the list could not be made public because of privacy concerns.
