The South China Morning Post was recognised for consistent, high-quality reporting on environmental news with a merit award at the third Asian Environmental Journalism Awards in Singapore yesterday.
Founded in 2012 by the Singapore Environment Council, the awards recognise excellence in environmental news reporting across the region. Some 150 submissions - double last year's - for the six award categories were received, from 21 countries.
The Post received a merit award in the SEC-Lee Foundation Excellence in Environmental Reporting by a Media Organisation for analytical and lively reports on pollution, water management and energy issues on the mainland and Hong Kong by Stephen Chen, Li Jing and Cheung Chi-fai.
The winner of that category was Channel NewsAsia.
The Environmental Story of the Year award went to Fernando Gracia Sepe Jnr of ABS-CBN News in the Philippines for his "A tale of three storms".
Other awards were given for environmental journalist, young journalist, blogger and photograph of the year.
