A 5.4kg consignment of cocaine with an estimated street value of HK$5.5 million was found concealed in six cans of pineapple in the luggage of a passenger who arrived from South America, police say.

The haul was discovered in the checked-in luggage of a 56-year-old Hong Kong man when he was intercepted by customs and police officers at the arrivals hall of the Hong Kong International Airport at about 9pm on Wednesday.

"We believe the consignment is for local consumption," a police officer said yesterday.

He said the suspect had travelled to the city from Brazil via Abu Dhabi and Shanghai.

"An initial investigation showed that he had been recruited as a drug courier," the police officer said. "We believe he took the circuitous smuggling route in an attempt to avoid being detected."
