A mainland businessman shouted "help" and "I have been abducted" on the streets yesterday after he escaped from a Sha Tin house where he was allegedly illegally detained for two days.

The 47-year-old victim said passers-by saw him and heard his pleas early yesterday, but took no action in Ha Keng Hau village, off Fu Kin Street. The site is a few hundred metres from Tin Sum police station.

The man then flagged down a taxi and asked the driver to take him to the station.

"But the cabbie asked him whether he had money to pay the taxi fare. He was ordered to leave the cab, as he told the driver he did not have any money," a police officer said.

The victim found his way to the station, where he reunited with his friend, a mainland businessman who was also allegedly abducted. An initial investigation showed the two mainlanders were in debt after losing heavily in a Macau casino recently, according to the officer.
