Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying faced a barrage of angry callers this morning, as a poll said only 30 per cent of respondents were satisfied with the policy address he rolled out yesterday.

Leung attended a joint radio phone-in programme hosted by RTHK, Commercial, Metro and DBC to explain his third annual policy address, which tackled thorny issues such as national education.

In his speech yesterday, he proposed helping pupils join mainland study programmes at least once in primary school and once in secondary school.

But Ms Ho, a mother of two from Kwai Chung, questioned why the government is encouraging pupils to visit the mainland while Leung’s children graduated from British universities.

“I also hope that my kids can go to Britain, not to the mainland … not [competing for school places] with kids of mainland mothers. It is not just Sheung Shui, Tsuen Wan is also [packed with mainland tourists] just like Shenzhen,” she said.

Leung explained that apart from the fact that pupils should learn about the nation’s development, mainland trips would also cost less.
