The war of words between executive councillor Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun and lawmaker Albert Chan Wai-yip escalated yesterday after she refused to withdraw her comparison between the pan-democrats' filibusters hurting "innocent people" and Islamic State militants beheading hostages.

Filibustering by the pan-democrats struck down a government plan to set up a new innovation and technology bureau on Saturday when the Legislative Council's Finance Committee failed to vote on a HK$35 million funding request. There are no more committee meetings before the deadline of the end of next month to set up the bureau.

Law yesterday said she was not being spiteful when telling People Power lawmaker Chan in a WhatsApp row last week that those who "hurt innocent people would be destroyed by heaven and earth". She made the comment while asking Chan to stop filibusters.

Law reiterated that she was responding to a message from Chan which said, "With you people governing, Hong Kong will definitely sink", after sending him a message calling for his support for the bureau and offering to explain its importance.

Law said she was merely telling Chan not to damage innocent parties by obstructing the bureau.

"It's like those, what do you call them, Islamic [State militants] … I'm heartbroken whenever I see such things, why would they capture random people on the street to behead?" she said.
