A Hong Kong police officer's MP5 submachine gun has accidentally gone off in the second such case in less than a year.

No one was injured, but the latest incident will raise questions about the safety of police officers' handling of loaded weapons.

The live round was discharged from the male officer's gun at around 4pm on Monday in a loading area inside the New Territories South regional police headquarters on Shing Mun Road, Tsuen Wan. The district crime squad is investigating.

The incident comes months after a Hong Kong policewoman’s Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun went off while she was unloading it at Mong Kok police station.

The bullet hit the wall and damaged a wooden partition in the July incident. Again no one was hurt.

An ensuing police investigation focused on whether the gun had been mishandled, as it is rare for an MP5 to discharge accidentally.
