Opponents of the government's plan to build two new towns in the northeastern New Territories have made their final effort to persuade the Town Planning Board to reject the controversial project.

Yesterday was the last opportunity for the group to make their case before members, who have been hearing submissions on zoning plans for the Kwu Tung North and Fanling North proposal since October.

Becky Au Hei-man, a member of the League of Fanling North Villages and Residents, broke into tears when she told members she had received an eviction letter from Henderson Land Development before the Lunar New Year holiday.

"How are you going to compensate my home to me? I feel so terrible. What have we done wrong? Why do we have to lose our homes," she said as she sobbed.

The group again questioned why the government refused to develop other sites, such as the Fanling golf club, and insisted farming was essential to the development of the city.

"The government has a responsibility to preserve our farmlands. To become a metropolis, Hong Kong should not only rely on high-rise buildings, shopping centres, finance. We also need a beautiful garden in our backyard," one woman told the board members.
