A man accused of killing and dismembering an elderly husband and wife said his co-defendant – the couple’s son – took him to buy knives that he thought would be used for cutting steak, the Court of First Instance heard.

The prosecution played video interviews between Tse Chun-kei, 38 and police before the nine-member-jury this morning. In the recording, the police showed a number of items that were seized in Tse’s Tai Kwok Tsui flat, including steak knives.

Tse admitted he bought two of the knives to cut beef. He said that he and fellow defendant Henry Chau, 31, then bought a pack of four knives at a supermarket in Tsim Sha Tsui.

“[Henry Chau] said my knife was not good enough and could not cut things smoothly. He said he had bought red wine and needed a better knife,” Tse said.

Tse claimed Henry Chau then took him to another supermarket to buy the pack of four knives.

The court was previously told that one of the knives that the pair bought from the supermarket was used in the killing of Chau’s father, Chau Wing-ki, 65, and his mother Siu Yuet-yee, 63, in Tse’s flat on March 1, 2013.
