Hong Kong's flagship orchestra got a standing ovation on Tuesday from an appreciative Macau audience after a concert that took 13 years to materialise.
After its last appearance in 2002, the 85-strong Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra returned with an eclectic programme of gems it has toured around the world with. The exquisitely powerful sound awed the attentive music lovers, including officials of the local Cultural Bureau, organiser of the festival since 1986.
No work is better than The Grand Victory to open a return concert, warming up the players and the audience with rousing percussion and woodwind passages in the folk style of Shanxi Province. The biting rhythm was matched by the equally impressive nine suona players, whose double-tonguing technique over an extended note drew rapturous applause.
