Hong Kong hosted its biggest annual street party on Monday night as thousands of locals and tourists flocked to the Lunar New Year parade in Tsim Sha Tsui.
A chill in the air did nothing to dim the party mood as the Hong Kong Tourism Board-organised event provided a fitting finale to the first day of the Year of the Monkey.

Thirty-five local and international performance groups, made up of hundreds of performers, entertained crowds lining the Victoria Harbour waterfront in what was Hong Kong’s 21st Lunar New Year Parade.
And the party didn’t disappoint.

Revellers roared their approval as Germany’s offering of giant fluorescent puppets strutted their stuff, followed by life-size dinosaurs from the Netherlands which reached into the crowds, much to the delight of visitors.

Leading the local performers were traditional lion and dragon dances, and also sharing the street stage, ballet, hip hop and rope-skipping artists.
Crowds whipped up some of the biggest cheers for parade sponsor Cathay Pacific’s flight attendants in their iconic red and gold uniform who pivoted and shuffled along the route.

Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah lead festival proceedings, promising a “marvellous and magical” performance at the night parade, in a week of Lunar New Year activities to which Hong Kong is playing host.
“What makes this festive occasion unlike any other, anywhere, is its setting. Right here in Hong Kong, where East and West meet, mingle and put on a show for you all to remember,” he said. “Tonight’s parade is going to be marvellous and magical, a perfect showcase that is made for Hong Kong.”

While organisers estimates crowds ran into six figures – last year saw an estimated 150,000 venture to the streets – almost three million people have witnessed the party proceedings since the night parade launched.
Tens of thousands more people are expected to surge into Victoria Harbour on Tuesday to witness a spectacular firework display to cap off a memorable start to the New Year.
