Emergency crews were placed on alert and standby at Hong Kong International Airport at daybreak Friday after a cargo flight reported a fire warning indication on board and requested an emergency landing.

Eleven fire engines, four fireboats and four ambulances were deployed after a call was made to the airport’s air traffic control centre shortly after 5.45am Friday, according to the fire department.

“We were informed that a full emergency landing was requested because there was an indication of fire in its cargo compartment,” a Fire Services Department spokesman said.

He said the emergency landing was executed without incident.

The spokesman said there was no sign of burning or damage on board the flight and that no casualties were reported.

The centre received an emergency landing request from Polar Air Cargo flight PO654 at 5.45am, which had departed Chek Lap Kok airport at 5.41am.
