The Hong Kong Observatory could issue a No 1 typhoon warning on Thursday morning, with the forecaster also expecting showers, thunderstorms and squalls that day.

“The broad area of low pressure to the west of Luzon has entered the central and northern parts of the South China Sea and is developing gradually, but its structure is still loose,” the forecaster said on Wednesday.

“If [it] further develops into a tropical cyclone [on Thursday morning] and is located within 800km [497 miles] of Hong Kong, the Observatory will consider issuing the No 1 typhoon signal by then.”

The Observatory said intense thunderstorms caused by upper-air disturbances were affecting the northeastern part of the South China Sea and were forecast to move towards the Pearl River Delta on Thursday.
