A 51-year-old cancer patient who collapsed on a Cathay Pacific Airways flight to Hong Kong from the United Kingdom was pronounced dead on Friday morning.

Flight CX216 took off from Manchester and landed at Hong Kong International Airport at 6.52am on Friday, with police receiving a report about the man’s condition at 6.16am.

The passenger, Shum Chung-lai, had suffered from pancreatic cancer since June last year. He emigrated to the UK in 2022 with his wife and two children but had to fly back to Hong Kong for consultations at Queen Mary Hospital and Gleneagles Hospital, police said.

During the flight, Shum experienced stomach discomfort, with his wife checking on him regularly throughout.

The wife found him unresponsive when she tried to wake him at 4.15am and notified cabin crew, who reported the incident. The crew administered first aid to Shum, but after 50 minutes, he still showed no signs of life.
