A Hong Kong tour group on an aurora-chasing boat ride near an island in Australia has saved two fellow city residents who went missing while scuba diving, in a dramatic rescue the agency said “shone light on the brilliance of humanity”.

WWPKG Tours detailed the rescue in a Facebook post on Sunday and commended tour group leader Foxman Hui and his members who were on a trip in Tasmania.

They were out at sea on a Southern Lights sightseeing cruise in Hobart on Friday, when they came across two Hong Kong divers who had been swept away by ocean currents.

“The tour leader on board used a smartphone camera to search the sea surface, ultimately locating and rescuing the two individuals around 500 metres (546.6 yards) away from their original planned surfacing point,” the agency wrote, posting photos of the divers.

“He showed exceptional alertness and professionalism in a split second, resourcefully using a smartphone camera to search the pitch-black sea and successfully rescuing two divers swept away by the currents.”

The agency said the tour members embodied a true spirit of mutual care and support.

“This heroic act not only saved two fellow Hong Kong residents but also shone a light on the brilliance of humanity, making us incredibly proud!” it said.
