Hong Kong motorists warned of delays as road works start on major city route

Drivers told to leave for work or school earlier as emergency repair work is being carried out on Waterloo Road near Suffolk Road

Hong Kong’s Transport Department has told commuters to leave home earlier for work and school on Thursday morning as road works are expected to cause serious traffic congestion on a major thoroughfare connecting the New Territories and Kowloon.

Emergency repair work is being carried out on Waterloo Road near Suffolk Road.

The Tsim Sha Tsui-bound slow lane of the two-lane Waterloo Road flyover outside the Baptist University has been closed while the work is carried out, the Transport Department said in an announcement shortly after 8.30pm on Wednesday.

Only the fast lane on the flyover is available to motorists. The road work was expected to extend to Thursday.

The department anticipated that the southbound traffic on Waterloo Road and Lion Rock Tunnel will be “very congested” on Thursday morning.

Motorists heading to Kowloon via Lion Rock Tunnel were advised to consider using alternative routes.

Commuters who need to go to Kowloon Tong via the tunnel were advised to start their journeys early and allow more time for travel, the department said.

They are also are advised to pay attention to radio or TV announcements on traffic conditions.
