A two-year-old boy was found unconscious at home on Friday and later died in hospital, according to Hong Kong authorities.

Emergency personnel were called to a 10th-floor flat at Saddle Ridge Garden on Kam Ying Road in Ma On Shan following a report made by a woman shortly before 7am.

Police said the boy was unconscious when officers and paramedics arrived.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at the scene and on the way to the hospital.

A police spokeswoman said the boy was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, where he was declared dead at about 8am.

Police were investigating if foul play was involved, but at 11.15am, the spokeswoman said the boy had an illness and initial checks found nothing suspicious about the incident.

Authorities did not specify the relationship between the boy and the woman who made the report.
