Tasty sweet Christmas gifts help raise funds for Hong Kong’s less fortunate

Hotel offering personalised chocolates flavoured with caramel and thyme

At least one Hong Kong company is blending the allure of a unique personalised Christmas present this festive season with the opportunity to help a worthy cause.

A fundraising initiative by the Kowloon Shangri-La kicked off with a performance by a choir from the Singapore International School, followed by a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Tsim Sha Tsui East.

The efforts mark the 15th year that the luxury hotel is supporting Operation Santa Claus, an annual charity appeal organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK.

This year it will be selling personalised caramel and thyme-flavoured chocolates for just HK$168 (US$21.50) a box to raise funds for Operation Santa Claus.

Each box contains 10 pieces of chocolate, the first piece bearing the letter “I” and the second with a heart shape for “love”. Donors can fill the remaining eight pieces with names, words and emoticons of their choice.

The emoticons include a Christmas tree, teddy bear, pig, baby face, snowman, gingerbread man and smiley face.

“Christmas is about giving back and Shangri-La takes its corporate social responsibility very seriously,” general manager Philip Dewar said.

“I think also it’s fun because each year we have to come up with some idea about how we’re going to integrate the hotel into Operation Santa Claus and hopefully raise some money for those that are more needy than ourselves.”

Dewar expressed confidence that the chocolates, created by the hotel’s party chef, Wins Hung, would sell like hot cakes.

And Hung was convinced they would prove irresistible Christmas presents given their unique flavour.

“I chose caramel for its popularity among all ages, and thyme for its distinctive flavour,” he said.

“Christmas is a season of giving, so I hope donors and chocoholics will find these personalised chocolates fun, yummy and unique.”

The treats are now available at the Kowloon Shangri-La until Christmas Day.
