A woman’s Saturday shopping trip ended up with her in hospital, after she was hit by a flying marquee.

The 52-year-old, surnamed Tong, was near the D2 Place shopping centre on Cheung Yee Street, in Cheung Sha Wan, when the freak accident happened.

The marquee, which measured 10ft by 13ft and is believed to have belonged to a restaurant in the mall, reportedly fell from the 11th floor of Phase 1 of the development and struck the woman in the leg.

A strong monsoon signal had been issued throughout the day by the Hong Kong Observatory, with wind gusts reaching 70km/h (43.5mph) or above around the time of the accident.

Police said they received a report at 11.39am that the woman, who was conscious when officers arrived, had been hit by the tent. She was taken to the nearby Caritas Medical Centre for treatment.

Police are investigating.
