Cathay Pacific Airways unveiled the airline’s biggest makeover in two decades on Sunday, revealing a contemporary paint job for its fleet of over 150 aircraft.

Gone is the old design and logo that became an unmistakable part of the aviation landscape, as the modern look on the Boeing 777 jet sported a new all-green tailfin with a redesigned white brushwing over it.

The redesign marked the start of a US$10 billion investment. Next February, Cathay Pacific is set to take delivery of the first of 48 next-generation, fuel-efficient Airbus A350 planes, priming the company to expand and connect Hong Kong to more destinations around the world.

Ivan Chu Kwok-leung, the airline’s chief executive hailed the unveiling as a “new era” for the company.

The Cathay chief said the huge investments in new aircraft, existing products and the updated look and feel of the airline was a signal of “our ongoing commitment to build Hong Kong’s position as an international aviation hub.”

But the airline’s unveiling of the new livery on its YouTube channel was greeted with as much support as criticism and derision for tampering with a cultural icon. The paint job of old was considered by some netizens to be “timeless” and the new changes labelled “boring”.
