Traders are optimistic about the growth in the baby products market with the introduction of the two-child policy on the mainland, which came into effect on January 1.

The view comes ahead of the Toys and Games Fair, which will run alongside the Baby Products Fair and the International Stationery Fair at the Convention and Exhibiton Centre in Wan Chai from today until Thursday.

“We expect to see sales increase by at least 30 per cent,” said Natalie Li Lan, senior sales from Hong Kong-based toy manufacturer Nicetoys, which makes toys for newborn to one-year-old infants.

Her company was planning to branch out into the mainland market in the middle of this year – for the first time since its establishment in 1986.

“We mainly export products to Europe and the United States. While the quality of our products complies to their standards, many mainland manufacturers are still not able to do so,” said Li.

But Li and her colleagues were also developing more products in anticipation of more Chinese babies. “[Chinese parents] prefer red toys or those that symbolise auspiciousness,” she said.
