Almost one in three chief information officers in the city have recently had to respond to a major cyberattack on behalf of their companies, according to an annual poll.

The survey by London-based recruitment consultancy and IT outsourcing service provider Harvey Nash and KPMG showed that 31 per cent of Hong Kong CIOs had faced such issues in the past two years, compared to 28 per cent globally.

About 16 per cent of polled CIOs felt confident their organisations had been well prepared to identify and respond to cyberattacks, six per cent less than the global average.

The survey also showed that, like their worldwide counterparts, CIOs in Hong Kong were being hindered by the greatest global technology skills shortage since the financial crisis in 2008.

Some 73 per cent of those polled said they believed a lack of talent would prevent their organisations from keeping up with the pace of change, eight per cent more than the global average.
