One lucky winner claimed the HK$108 million Mark Six first prize after spending just HK$10 on half a ticket.

The total turnover for Friday’s draw reached HK$195 million, as punters tried their luck for the massive jackpot, collected from the previous eight draws that had had no first prize winners.

About 50 people queued up on Friday morning to be among the first to try their luck at the night's Mark Six HK$100 million windfall.

A mix of young and old, men and women, waited outside the Stanley Street Jockey Club branch. When it opened, they were immediately joined by dozens more.

At the head of the line was retiree Cheng Koon-fu, 65, who got there 20 minutes before the outlet opened at 11am. However, he planned to bet only HK$70.

Further down the queue was Suen Man-chiu, 22, who worked in a kitchen. When asked whether he hoped to strike it rich, Suen said: “I’m just here to try my luck. It’s an opportunity not to be missed.”

Like Cheng, he bet small – only $40.

By lunchtime, there was a steady stream of office workers at the branch, such as a woman surnamed Ko, in her 50s, who worked as a promoter.

“I'm just trying to get lucky,” she said, after she placed a $10 bet.

The Post then spoke to a 81-year-old woman who asked not to be named.

“I’ve won the third prize before," she proudly declared, even though she bet only about $100 this time round.
