Holidays at Harvard for four pupils who win scholarships

Four lucky youngsters will spend their summer studying at Harvard University after each winning scholarships of HK$110,000.

Four lucky youngsters will spend their summer studying at Harvard University after each winning scholarships of HK$110,000.

The Form Five pupils were the pick of 119 youngsters competing for the Harvard Book Prize Scholarship. They faced a series of interviews in which they spoke of their aspirations and responded to the theme of this year's prize - how a connected world impacts their personal life.

Chau Tak-huen, of Sha Tin Methodist College, plans to read international law and human rights during the seven-week programme. The 16-year-old dreams of working on human rights for the UN and says he is interested in the "right to protest".

He grew aware of the importance of the issue on a school trip to Sham Shui Po a few years ago.

"I saw people living in subdivided flats and cage homes who enjoy far less cultural and human rights than others do. The protection of human rights should start from the community."

Chau says what strikes him most is people generally lack understanding of their civil rights.
