Hong Kong has ranked second in the world in a massive global study of school performance – but regional rival Singapore topped the annual list as Asia dominated, filling the first five spots on the list of 76 countries and territories.

The study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, compared the results of mathematics and science tests among 15-year-olds around the world.

South Korea was ranked third, with Japan and Taiwan sharing fourth place. Mainland China was not ranked.

“If you go to an Asian classroom you’ll find teachers who expect every student to succeed. There’s a lot of rigour, a lot of focus and coherence,” Andreas Schleicher, the OECD’s education director, told the BBC

He said Singapore, which had high levels of illiteracy as recently as the 1960s, showed how quickly progress could be made.

The findings will be presented at a United Nations forum on education in South Korea next week, which will discuss targets for raising the standard of global education by 2030.
