A two-legged stray dog who gave birth to puppies on the mainland despite losing its hind legs in a train accident has been rescued by a Hong Kong charity and made its animal ambassador.

In a remarkable turnaround of fortunes, the resilient street dog - who scavenged for scraps on a railway station in the mainland's north - has been flown to a new life in Hong Kong with its surviving pup and made a canine ambassador for the Animals Asia Foundation.

Nine-year-old Lelly - its Chinese name was Si Bao - will star in anti-animal cruelty posters and television campaigns across Asia.

It has already won the hearts of one of the charity's keenest celebrity supporters, Downton Abbey actress Lesley Nicol, who met it on the mainland.

One of the perks of Lelly's new role will be a pair of wheels to make up for its missing back legs. The wheels are being designed by a Hong Kong specialist.

Lelly's lucky break came when Animals Asia's British founder Jill Robinson MBE, who is based in Hong Kong, spotted online news articles translated from mainland newspapers about the canine's astonishing survival story in February last year.
