Friends and colleagues have paid tribute to much-loved Lantau vet Dr Cheryl McMeekan, who died last week at the age of 43.

Originally from New Zealand, McMeekan moved to Hong Kong in 2004 and managed the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals clinic in Mui Wo.

It is understood she was due to start a new role with the SPCA in the coming weeks.

Yesterday, a friend and client of the clinic, Anna Fenton, said the Mui Wo community was still reeling from the news.

"Lots of flowers have been left for her outside SPCA. I hope Cheryl knew how much she meant to people, and how valued she was as part of the Mui Wo community," Fenton said.

"She was an immensely private person and often seemed more comfortable with animals than people, but she was unfailingly kind and would always help anyone."
