Inspiring stories behind Spirit of Hong Kong Awards - and now you can vote

Over the past few weeks you may have read of the blind singer keeping southern Chinese traditions alive; the engineering student who twice overcame a disease that nearly killed her; the man left in a wheelchair after polio who now takes part in sailing regattas; or the dedicated carer who ensures Hong Kong's elderly are not left to cope alone.

These are just some of the 22 nominees for the Spirit of Hong Kong Awards, organised annually by the . Our panel of judges will be deciding the winners in seven categories this year, but readers can also vote for their nominee for the People's Choice Award.

"We are delighted to be able to support the 's Spirit of Hong Kong Awards, which is into its third year," said one of the judges, Daryl Ng Win-kong, executive director of the Sino Group. "This is the one award that is all about the people whose quiet and self-effacing work has made a positive impact on the lives of others, whose decency has made Hong Kong such a wonderful city."

"It's important to emphasise the unsung hero, the ordinary person who contributes to the community day after day. I think the impact of these people can be quite big," said fellow judge Dr David Pang Ding-jung, chairman of the SCMP Group. "I tend to be more inclined towards people who are society-related, not making money but often showing us that what they do can make an impact and make the world a better place."

Over the next few weeks, our judges will be choosing between the nominees in seven categories - the Cultural Preservation Award; the Compassion Ambassador Award; the Overcoming Personal Challenge Award; the Corporate Citizen (Group) Award; the Community Contribution Award; the Innovating for Good Award; and the Lion Rock Entrepreneur (Group) Award.

Between today and August 5, you can also pick your candidate for the People's Choice Award. All nominees from the five non-group awards are eligible.
