LED light bulbs vary greatly in energy saving performance and a few models have failed to pass some safety tests, Hong Kong’s consumer watchdog said this morning.

The Consumer Council also warned Hongkongers of substandard wedding services after it received 31 complaints about venues and related services during the first half of this year.
“The efficacy can vary up to 100 per cent between different brands of LED light bulbs. One sample burnt out after being operated for about one-tenth of the claimed lifespan,” said Philip Leung Kwong-hon, the council’s vice chairman, referring to bulbs produced by Sunshine.

The council noted consumers usually chose light bulbs based on the luminous flux, efficacy and lifespans.

It found the luminous efficacy of the models varied from the lowest, 53.8 lumen output per watt (lm/W), to nearly a double at 107lm/W.

Manufacturers claimed lifespans of LED light bulbs could be over 10,000 hours, ranging from 15,000 to 50,000 hours.
