Hongkongers have reacted strongly after a university student was detained and threatened by MTR staff for bringing his cello onto the train yesterday.
According to Baptist University music student Ho Ka-yeung, staff said his case exceeded the official length limit and threatened to fine him up to HK$2000.
The MTR’s website says only one piece of luggage may be carried on a train at a time, and the total dimensions cannot exceed 170 centimetres, with no one side allowed to measure longer than 130cm.
However the MTR’s strict length rules could make life difficult for some riders.

Here are eight household items you won’t be able to take on the train:
Ironing board – 158 centimetres tall
Unfortunately if you were planning to do some ironing, but only just bought the board, you’d have to find another way to get it home. At 158cm long, it’s too much for the MTR.
Floor lamp – 151 centimetres tall
You also won’t be able to have any lamps in your house, unless you want to take them home by bus.
Television – 134 centimetres by 53 centimetres
If you can afford a new television then you can probably afford a taxi home – at least, hopefully you can because you can’t take it on the MTR.
Easel – 160 centimetres
Creative types who are looking for an easel should also look for an alternative ride home – at a whopping 160cm tall, it’s too big to take on the train.

Clothes rack – 151 centimetres by 99 centimetres
Without much room for cupboard space or a dryer in Hong Kong, a clothes rack could be essential to many local residents. But even dismantled, this 151 centimetre convenience is too much for the MTR.
Hat rack – 191 centimetres by 60 centimetres
Not the most common item to be found around town these days but even less common on the MTR if Hongkongers follow the rules – it’s simply too large.
Picture frame – 149 centimetres by 96 centimetres
While frames for paintings and photos can come in many sizes, Hongkongers who are looking to purchase one should pay careful attention to its dimensions. If it measures more than 130 centimetres, you can’t take it home on the train.
Grandfather clock – 195 centimetres
Not a regular purchase for Hongkongers nor one you would often see on the MTR – which is good because it isn’t allowed.
