A spectacular 23-minute National Day fireworks display was staged over Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour this evening to mark the 66th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China.
The show consisted of nine scenes, with highlights including the creation of Bauhinia patterns over Hong Kong's skyline in scene two as well as a scene depicting the five rings of the Winter Olympics in scene four to celebrate Beijing’s hosting of the winter games in 2022.
Heart-shaped patterns and a text message ‘LOL’ appeared in scene eight, which was followed by a fast and rhythmic firing of shells running for 28 seconds in the closing fireworks segment.
A total of 23,888 fireworks, requiring about 4.5 tonnes of gunpowder, were released in the HK$8 million production.
The show started at 9pm and was viewed by tens of thousands of revellers from both sides of the harbour.
