Move over static profile photos: Facebook has started to allow users to film a seven-second video clip which will then show up as your profile picture and play on loop.
Facebook is calling the feature “profile videos”.

The social network is introducing the feature on its mobile app for “a small number of iPhone users in the UK and California” and says it plans to roll it out to other markets in the coming months.
No word yet on when Hong Kong users of the site can expect to be delighted – or annoyed – by the eye-catching feature.

While not technically GIFs, the profile video is reminiscent of animated images that were iconic of flashy and cluttered MySpace profiles in the early 2000s. Facebook has slowly embraced the resurgent GIF. It began allowing users to use them earlier this year and is now adding animation in profile pictures alongside a number of other profile changes.
