A special meeting of the University of Hong Kong’s governing council will be held next week after the government failed to name a new chairman.

Outgoing chairman Dr Leong Che-hung sent a message to council members last night saying he had instructed the council secretary to arrange an urgent meeting next Thursday to “consider the arrangements for the council business until a new council chairman is appointed”.

The meeting will also receive a report on the university’s recent application for a court injunction barring media publication of details of council business.

A detailed agenda would be issued to members early next week, Leong said in his message.

Leong said it was his responsibility as the chairman for the last time “to ensure that business of the council would not be affected by the absence of a chairman”.
