The South China Morning Post has won gold and silver in the Asian Digital Media awards ceremony held Thursday in Hong Kong.

The real-time, tailored SCMP tablet app won gold in the Best in Tablet Publishing category after it was developed in 2015 to give readers a “visual driven approach,” SCMP Deputy Director of Digital Innovation and Technology, Ben Abbotts said.
“We’re pleased our app has been so well received,” he said.
“Audience engagement is significantly higher than any of our other SCMP digital platforms and we believe the app’s visual driven approach is the key factor driving this.”
The judges remarked that the tablet app "looks and feels great - and great to see you've achieved [a] good response from your readers".
A Maid’s Tale, the full-frame multimedia investigation of life as a domestic helper in Hong Kong took silver in the Best Online Video category.
Using a style of visual storytelling that runs short video loops in place of still frames, Multimedia Journalist Robin Fall drew on previous projects such as SCMP’s coverage of the Occupy protests to create the project with journalist Kristine Servando.
The pair went to the Philippines to find Maricel Angeles, 29, the focus of the piece, and track her passage through maid training camps and into Hong Kong, then her return.
“We wanted to find an average case, not one of these extreme, sensationalised cases,” said Fall.

The piece exposes issues facing Angeles like her young daughter’s tears as she left her home, and the rights afforded domestic helpers in Hong Kong.
Modestly, Fall said the award wasn’t the important part, “but if the award helps the story get out there and people read it, and the story helps the plight of the domestic helper in Hong Kong then that’s what the story is there for”.

In making their judgement, the panel concluded A Maid's Tale was "best of show". 
"This is a powerful story, beautifully told. The videos are carefully made and wonderfully woven into the narrative structure. This is a character-driven entry that showcases a high degree of coordinated journalism efforts to achieve this quality."
SCMP Editor-in-Chief Wang Xiangwei said the distinctions among the region's top mastheads was "an honour and an affirmation".
"The SCMP is committed to delivering a world class digital news product for our readers from Hong Kong and around the world.  To be awarded gold for Best in Tablet Publishing by our international peers is both an honour and an affirmation that our team's effort to deliver best-in-class news platforms is realised", said Mr Wang.
Mr Wang continued, "to be recognised for Silver in the Best Online Video category is deeply motivating for the online desk, especially as we seek to continue investing in digital-first news experiences to our valued readers".
These awards, considered the most prestigious recognition for media in Asia, mark the sixth year the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers have held the ceremony.
The judges chose from entries from across the Asia-Pacific region including Australian, Singaporean and global mastheads.
